Ask an experienced project forwarder when a movement actually begins, and they won't point to the day the trailer is loaded. They'll point to the day someone drove the route with a tape measure, a camera and a checklist. The route survey is the first real move in any project cargo job — and it happens long before the wheels turn.
For standard freight, the route is a detail. For out-of-gauge and heavy-lift cargo, the route is the project. A single low bridge, a tight roundabout or an under-rated culvert can turn a feasible movement into an impossible one. The survey is how you find that out on paper, rather than at 2 a.m. with a stalled convoy blocking a highway.
What a route survey actually is
A route survey is a physical and technical assessment of the entire path a load will travel — from the port or origin, along every kilometre of corridor, to the exact point of delivery. It measures the road against the cargo. Where the standard freight world assumes the road will cope, the project cargo world assumes nothing and verifies everything.
A proper survey answers a single question in a hundred different ways: will this specific load, at this specific size and weight, physically pass every point on this route?
What the survey looks for
- Vertical clearances — bridges, overpasses, power lines, gantries and tree canopy that cap the maximum height of the load
- Horizontal constraints — road width, lane geometry, roundabouts, and the turning radii at junctions a long trailer must swing through
- Bridge and culvert capacity — whether structures can bear the axle loads and total mass of the combination crossing them
- Road surface and gradient — camber, slope, surface condition and the points where a heavy load risks grounding or losing traction
- Obstructions and street furniture — medians, signage, kerbs and anything that may need temporary removal and reinstatement
- The delivery point — site access, the final approach, and the space needed to position and offload the unit
Why it is non-optional for OOG cargo
With out-of-gauge cargo, the margins are measured in centimetres. A transformer that is 4.9 metres high does not care that the bridge ahead is rated for 5.0 metres if the survey used an out-of-date figure and the real clearance is 4.8. The consequences of getting it wrong are not minor: a blocked corridor, a damaged structure, a damaged unit worth more than the entire freight budget, and a programme delay that ripples through an entire construction schedule.
The survey also drives everything downstream. The permit application depends on it. The choice of trailer and axle configuration depends on it. The escort plan, the timing, the need for any temporary works — all of it flows from what the survey finds. Skip the survey, and every subsequent decision is a guess.

What to do before your next movement
- Confirm the exact final dimensions and mass of the cargo as early as possible — the survey is only as accurate as the figures it is measured against
- Commission the route survey before committing to delivery dates, not after
- Include the delivery site itself in the survey scope — the last hundred metres onto a site are often the hardest
- Engage a forwarder who actually runs the corridor, so the survey reflects current conditions, not a map from two years ago
